My chosen genre: Horror

The genre i have chosen for my opening scene is the horror genre. I feel to replicate the horror genre, less props and setting, which i wouldn't have access to, is required to achieve an authentic look. Rather than a science-fiction movie which is set on another planet, this could be set in a regular home, therefor making it far more attainable and realistic.

Research and typical conventions of a horror film

Narrative structure
There is often a common narrative that films of the horror genre follow, this usually tends to resolve off a protagonist that survives who has a mission to overthrow and defeat the villain who is their attacker. narratives of horror movies are often most formulaic.

Iconography
There are typical colours commonly used in horror films that would connote to death and danger, tying in with the message the director is attempting to convey. The colour Red is commonly used in horror films since automatically associating with blood and danger, subconsciously causing the viewer to feel unease. The colour black is again very common, black signifies darkness, coldness and death; all the elements usually wanted in a horror film.
Props
The props used in horror movies usually have something significant in common - They often have sinister, frightful connotations often linking to the theme of death. For example 'Saw', where the villain has a chainsaw, who proceeds to amputate his victims limbs. Masks are often used as well, this protects the villains identity adding a sense of mystery therefore danger. All of these things help strike fear into the audience.
