Analysing opening scenes - Character
Analysing the opening scenes of how characters are introduced to the audience, comparing:
- BabyDriver
- Hot Fuzz
Hotfuzz initiates by throwing the audience directly into a high speed montage, this montage enables the director to pour an abundance of information condensed into a short period of time to almost overloading the viewers with mise-en-scene involving the way the character dresses, the way he conducts himself and the way he talks, or in our scenario lack of speech, all indicate character traits directors or prompting the audience to home in on.
Uniform -
The Hotfuzz opening scene initiates with an uncut 15 second shot of Sgt Nicholas Angel walking directly towards the camera in full police uniform, immediately stopping and flashing his police badge. This indicates, as soon as the film commences, the protagonist is stern and somber. BabyDriver initiates its opening scene with the protagonist wearing casual gear in comparison to the rest of his team wearing dark suits. This immediately highlights to the audience the character is a non-conformist. The main character the audience is being met with is also wearing dark sunglasses, this could subtly be referencing a potential darker, ambiguous side to this character we are yet to discover.
Speech-
Hotfuzz begins with a montage narrated by the character on screen, the character's voice is monotone suggesting this character is bleak and mundane. BabyDriver intentionally opens with an entire 6-minute opening scene without the protagonist talking once, this indicates the protagonist being introverted or uninterested.
