Opening scene conventions - Hot fuzz

Hot Fuzz -

Hot Fuzz's opening scene is created using a montage of various shots involving scenarios establishing the main character's progression into the experienced, accomplished officer he is today. The exercises and procedures associated with police training and combat are briefly displayed on screen, however for a significantly short period of time enabling viewers to only catch a glimpse of this police officers years of training condensed into just over two minutes. The montage sets a foundation to build a relationship with the character portrayed by displaying specific quirky and eccentric character traits allowing the audience to develop a fondness for the irregular character. What the audience can initially detect is a rigid, determined yet likable police officer with extensive training and knowledge within his field.

Other conventions I feel are typical of opening sequences include:
  • Production company logo
  • Titles
  • Establishes genre
  • Establishes the director's style
