Opening scene conventions - Baby Driver

Baby Driver -

Baby Driver's opening scene is significantly longer than most being over five minutes long, yet unusual to most since having almost no dialogue. The lack of dialogue from the main character immediately allows viewers to familiarise themselves with his personality and begin to develop a relationship along with diegetic music selected from his iPod - a song over 20 years old despite occurring in the modern day. All these subtle allusions play an essential part in building an image of the main character for the audience.

Other conventions that are typical of opening sequences include:

  • Establishes the style of the director
  • Establishes the genre of the film through mise-en-scene
  • This opening scene doesn't include production company logos or titles
