Conduct lighting tests
There are three different styles of professional ways to light a face, using a basic definition , butterfly lighting is where the the light source is directly adjacent to the subject's face, creating an equal amount of light everywhere on the face. Split lighting is where the source of light is coming entirely from one single side, creating one side of the subject's face to be lit whilst the other is significantly darker.
Therefore rather than having the entirety of my protagonist's face lit, I will use split lighting, the effect I am looking for will look similar to split lighting. Here is an example of how I will light my opening scene from a lighting test that I conducted using the actor playing my protagonist:
Due to my opening scene belonging to the horror genre, it is a typical convention of the horror genre to create some form of enigma and symbolism using the lighting, this is often done by using split lighting. These images of movies that have incorporated split lighting come from 'Don't Breathe'(2016) and 'The Hole'(2009).
