Analysing opening scenes - Location

The two opening scenes of films I will be analysing are:

The Shinning -

Saving Private Ryan -

The location of a film's establishing sequence is crucial to the story the film is attempting to convey, often containing a lot of subtle meaning and inference from the opening location shots.

'The Shining's' genre is horror, therefore the director tries to express is a feeling of desperation and isolation, this essentially is conveyed through the opening shots. The opening shots from 'The Shining' depict vast remote locations this subconsciously allows the viewer to realise that help is distant if anything alarming were to occur. The shots are taken using a helicopter illustrating the car the character is driving in as very small. This shot taken from above is a high-angled shot, this creates the image that the protagonist is inferior, vulnerable and defenceless if something were to happen to them. This creates tension for the viewer since the reveal of the plot is thrilling.

'Saving Private Ryan' is a film of the action genre. The director wants the viewers to gain a sense of adrenaline that the soldiers on-screen are experiencing. The opening scene begins with the soldiers crammed on boats, vomiting due to seasickness; therefore the director ensures the shot is anything but steady, rather an unstable shot, constantly swaying in every direction. The opening shot of the scene is a skewed angle of the bleak beach, this is portraying the upside-down mayhem about to occur that this isn't a conventional scenario. Once all the soldiers are in the water, the camera follows one continuous blurred unsteady shot, this is showing the relentless battle these soldiers are going through.
