Analysing opening scenes - Enigma
Enigma means the different methods used within an opening scene used to create mystery and suspense, laying down the foundations of the plot of the film ahead, often involving foreshadowing. Enigma keeps the audiences interest, keeping them intrigued and wanting to watch the rest of the film, getting them hooked from the start.
The two films I will be analysing are:
The Dark Knight
The Woman In Black
Both of the examples I have selected, I have chosen for different reasons; although both captivate the audience, it is for different reasons. 'The Dark Knight' excites the viewer, convincing them to continue watching. 'The Woman In Black' shocks and confuses the viewer convincing them to continue watching.
'The Dark Knight' is such a captivating opening run-and-gun bank heist, immediately appealing to those that crave action, using sophisticated tools and weaponry, finishing with a bus ploughing through a wall. There is a brief cameo in the opening scene from the actor William Fitchner. The villain is then finally introduced at the end of the scene, once again exciting fans for the long awaited sequel to the first instalment.
'The Woman In Black' commence with what seems to be an innocent scene of young girls playing with their dolls. Without any meaning provided the girls are suddenly bewitched slowly walking towards and jumping out of a window. The scene then finishes by slowly dollying backwards to reveal the back of a woman in black. This leaves the audience in shock and creates enigma and many questions the audience may ask such as; 'why did they jump from the window?'
